Historial State Atlases

Historical State Atlases

Summary

As more states began adopting Nystrom products in their classrooms, school districts started to request a state-specific history atlas. Texas and Georgia are two of those states.

My Part

Cartographer

Skills Learned + Demonstrated

  • Historical, reference, and thematic map design

  • Adherence to state and district-level curriculum

  • Adherence to the creative process (learn, draft, create, revise)

  • Demonstrating passing of time and order of events on a map

The Proposal

Starting from scratch, Texas and Georgia needed atlases that focused on their place in the World’s historical timeline. Working out to roughly 90 maps per atlas, the maps would include regional close-ups, thematic maps covering topics like demographics, climate, and economics, and historical maps covering topics from the Civil War to the Civil Rights Movement.

What I Did

Because these atlases were the first in what could potentially be a series of 50+ atlases, I designed a consistent design language that covered the typefaces, color palette, label hierarchy, iconography, and linework. These state historical atlases do not stray too far from their roots, however, and both echo Nystrom design elements throughout their pages.

The Result

New regional physical and political maps demonstrating new iconography, label layout, and new legend design.
